#5WomenArtists

The #5WomenArtists campaign, created by the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) in 2016, directly addresses the gender imbalance in the presentation of art in the United States and abroad, assuring great women artists a place of honour now and into the future.

When you ask someone to name five women artists, they might not be able to, or it might take them longer to think of five female artists than five male artists. Women artists remain dramatically underrepresented and undervalued in museums, galleries, and auction houses.

NMWA’s award-winning #5WomenArtists social media campaign has galvanised more than 1,000 cultural institutions from seven continents and nearly 50 countries, plus thousands of individuals to answer the question—without hesitation— “Can you name five women artists?”

Art Girl Rising was inspired by NMWA’s #5WomenArtists campaign, but is not affiliated with NMWA. A portion of the sale of each t-shirt sold is donated to NMWA to help fulfil their mission to champion women through the arts.
